Volume 13 marks the beginning of the fourth year of The Silent Ballet’s compilation series. Three years ago the first volume was sent out to the world via the Internet, and today we’re still dedicated to bringing our readers exciting, innovative compilations filled with the best and brightest artists from around the globe.

We’ve come a long way since Poetry Without Words, but hopefully the series has shown that the website is unrestrained by genre and is willing to travel to any corner of the world to unearth up-and-coming musicians. Volume 13 feels particularly international, featuring artists from four continents and nine countries, yet also demonstrates that there is something that connects all of us nonetheless.

We’re committed to our goal of providing quality music in a respectable format without charge. As one of life’s greatest pleasures, music should be freely available to all and resistent to commodification.

Armed with a 12 strings acoustic guitar, an intoxicated banjo and a cheeky Weissenborn, amongst other soaked instruments, Israel’s Yair Yona adapts his British Folk influences and his love for the groundbreaking guitar works of John Fahey, to a captivating trip down memory lane of the 1920s & 1930s Mississippi and Delta blues, country, rag-time and contemporary acid-folk.

Set The White Flags On Fire Slowly aka Белые Флаги Зажигайте Медленно was started by Ilya Sizov (guitar, bass), Boris Ionov (guitar) and Oleg Vakhromeev (keyboards, sampler, field recordings) in Moscow in 2006. They were joined by Sasha Chirkin (drums) from the band Secrets Of The Third Planet (an offshoot of well-known Silence Kit) with whom the three shared a rehearsal spot.

Analog Vibrations. That points into the right direction. Summons of Shining Ruins is a project of Shinobu Nemoto, who works with electric guitar, tape delay, old rhythm machines, stompboxes and 4-track-recorders. No computer or software is used to record this work. And you can hear that in every tone.

"Bird Requiem" sounds at the first listen extremly raw. You can not define what you hear in the first moment. But everything sounds a bit haunting, hidden under a layer of dust. But the longer you listen, the more you can feel how warm everything sounds and how spirited this work is.
You can point out subtle melodies, coming to you through this thick curtain build by delay over delay and tone over tone. You can hear the rhythm machine, ticking and rumbling from the past. And at some points you can imaging voices or shapes, floating by.

To follow Shinobu's advice: Listen to it loud and feel the analog vibration.

Eluvium is ambient recording artist Matthew Robert Cooper who currently resides in Portland, Oregon. What does it sound like? If you're down with the 12rec.-backcatalogue, you'll probably remember the Dusty Window EP by Californian Giraffe. Like him, Fred uses his acoustic guitar for most of his compositions. Folk is an important influence, and the boy Baty surely enjoys the last 40 years' classical Pop-bands. But in distinction to Giraffe, Fred doesn't intend to write 'songs' like them- his instrumental Pop-music avoids vocals, is built from clever structures, unusual harmonic layering and a talent to let songs end. No psychedelic Freak Folk-jams in here! The late Talk Talk might be a good comparison, you can mention Brian Wilson, Sufjan Stevens or German Postfolk-duo Taunus. In all, you will enjoy his music even if it is of no importance to you that Fred's influences are more like jazz, contemporary composing or folklore - beauty is something everyone understands.

Milhaven are a postrock-band from Bochum we discovered two years ago. Sven Swift recorded and produced their first album and this brand new EP. The story so far...

After the release of Bars Closing Down in the early days of 12rec, Milhaven soon became one of our most downloaded artists. In the Winter of 2006, nearly one year ago, we met in their old, dirt-laden rehearsal room and started to record new songs. Hooked by the success of the debut LP, Sven thrashed the old tape-recorder and spend all his money on a 10-channel audio-interface. Milhaven gone digital! We were planning to release the EP in the spring of 2006 until Milhaven got thrown out of the rehearsal room- the ancient school-building we were recording in was said to collapse! Two months went by searching for a new location. When it was found in the blooming hills of a small city at the edge of the Ruhr-area, the sound was completely different to the old room. All set to zero, we re-started the recordings.

In the scorching heat of Summer we banned this four songs on tape. While the debut was recorded wearing woolly hat and scarf, this time the band was lost in sweat and fatigue. I.M. Wagner is less intimate than Bars Closing Down, but there's a trace of frantic power in the new songs that'll be new to you if you've never seen Milhaven live on stage. Check the noise-eruptions in half-improvised Lord Of Birds or the all-consuming end of Oh! Great Pacific. Still, there are expanded moments of gentle guitar-play you can find a lot of beauty in; the initial parts of Clean Room and the final acoustic-track Firnis maybe just the most obvious examples. Milhaven refined their songwriting both at the quiet and the loud parts and managed to record a dignified successor to the highly acclaimed debut LP. Go spread the word! (12rec)

Dusty Window, the first Giraffe EP for 12rec., is a collection of spare and beautiful folk songs. With intricate guitar-work and a characteristic voice, Giraffe is able to reveal more wisdom in a few minutes of his music than most artists can articulate on the length of a full album.

"Sad Sister," the opening song, is a call for a woman's liberation. It isn't simply an awkward "do your own thing" cliche, but a plea for individuality in a girl who is worth more than what she lets herself become. A descending melody phrase forms the minimal basis in "The Fifth Wheel" while James sings about the bliss of two others ...and breaks the hearts of the 12rec. A&Rs. "Venecian Blinds" is a concise folk miniature, "Clear Exotic Sea" the big pop-draft and sure to be his hitsingle. The EP ends with "An Imperfect Lovesong ..." which works beautifully with its spontaneous and scribble-like declaration of love to a small area of skin, with breathless melodica and fading voice.

During "Clear Exotic Sea," Giraffe asks his swimming muse if the ocean might be compatible with him. We feel pretty sure that the answer is clear.

Tisza meets Dunav is the new album by Sasa Vojvodic, also known as Letna, a producer based in Paris and born in Serbia, ex Yugoslavia. With Alexandre Navarro he coordinates Sem label and the brand new Iod netlabel, the union between Eko and Standardklik. Letna already collaborated with Zymogen in the Sky Diary Edits project and we're very happy to start 2008 with his brand new album.

Tisza meets Dunav is a concept work inspired by Sasa's native country, Serbia. Every song is dedicated to a specific place in the area of the Tisza, which falls into Dunav, the Danube, one of the biggest rivers in Eastern Europe. Nature elements inspired most of the album: Deliblatska Pescara is the largest sandy terrain in Europe once part of a vast prehistoric desert, Fruska Gora is a beautiful mountain, while Ledinci and Jezera are two lakes located in Serbia. The musical narrative of this album develops slowly through different sound layers: pure and delicate melodies, distant voices, guitar notes, drones, microtonal sound-waves and field recordings.
The evocative power of Letna's music reaches high levels exemplified by the intense momentum of 'White City', a song dedicated to Belgrade. The emotive atmosphere of songs like 'Deliblatska Pescara' and 'Crossing the Bridge (Novisad)' is present throughout the album. Field recordings feature in every song which guide the listener into a continuum of perfectly designed soundscapes.

Tisza meets Dunav is a progession of Letna's musical research which helps us understand his poetry and the deep meanings hidden behind his abstract creations.

The Taciturn LP fuses instrumental Rockmusic with moments of Alt. Country and epic Indiepop, keeping an eye on melody and structure. Imagine a mixture of Canadian GY!BE, the Americana Avant-Garde of Chicago's Brokeback and the huge melodies of Italian Postrockers Giardini di Mirò. Nic might not be the perfect musician, but he knows how to build up a song. For example, Taciturn I lasts nearly 10 minutes but you won't regret any single second. There's a strong sense of yearning throughout the whole LP that invokes a lot of pictures. Badly Asbestos-Covered sounds like desert and sea at the same time, bringing together slide guitar and accordion. The heavy string-arrangement for the final track I Never Listen is among the most touching I've ever heard.

This is a collection of unreleased material from the last year - some sketches for films, some pieces that never really got finished, etc. It's possible that one or two of these will be redone for future releases, but most of them are just sketches and ideas that don't quite fit in anywhere. The Bird Ensemble is influenced heavily from the jazz fusion and minimalist movements of the seventies. The result of this delicate combination is quite evident on their free and legal online album The Last Songbook. It is a gentle but engrossing collection of instrumental music that is melodic yet quite beautiful. It sounds highly arranged but still fresh and spontaneous. “Mr Moss” and “West Helena are two highlight tracks that should endear you to the quietly stimulating sound of this band. It is a splendid effort.

The Sleeping Tree is Giulio Frausin from Italy. In the Spring of 2008, Filippo Aldovini of Zymogen Netlabel recommended this decent guy to us. We got in for a chat, failed to meet in Düsseldorf but agreed on a release somewhat later the year. Giulio's blueprint of low-key Pop- and Folk music was absorbing from the first seconds of his heart rendering "Love is an Eternal Lie" hit single, online as a demo version at myspace back then. The Sleeping Tree appeared with a bitter-sweet street ballad on our jubelee compilation ("You've Got To Be Strong"), afterwards Giulio locked himself in to record and produce his debut album "Leaves and Roots" you are lucky to download now.

Giulio reduced his music to the essential basics of Folk. Acoustic guitar and his wonderful voice, a little bit of melodica and mouth harp, some delay here and there, nothing else. His music has a stunning clarity and vulnerability that brings forth a strange feel of timelessness- The Sleeping Tree could equally be a contemporary of Nick Drake, Mark Hollis or Ben Harper. You like him if you dig Crepusculum. All these comparisons limp and the truth, as always, lies in-between. While the instrumental pieces on "Leaves and Roots" are introspect and melancholy, Giulio's vocal songs are well-nigh uplifting. A discreet Worldmusic influence is present, mixed with a grasp for melody that knows as much about Jazz as about Popmusic. Catchy, but never shallow. His voice is placed prominent in the mix, very intimate and beautiful, and his slight Italian accent is super. Giulio's dear sister Teresa did the harmonius artwork.

Beautifully layered, captivating and incredibly evocative.

This album has so many stand out tracks, so I will just start from the beginning: "Sins of a Solar Empire" progresses in a way that you would expect from the biggest names in the genre. "This Day" is a triumphant tale of freedom that reaches epic conclusions in a sea of distortion and melody. "This is the End of Everything," a serene and beautiful piano piece narrated with evocative vocals leads into what is arguably the albums best track "Terrorforming." A beautiful down-tempo melody dominates "Fallback Lighthorsemen" and my mind for quite some time after hearing it. "In Perfect Harmony" closes the album in like-minded fashion with a great string section. This is the best album I've heard this year. Toma – a criminally underrated musician. The sources of this album are from the album "El Viaje Mistico" (The Mystical Journey), originally released in 2001. The sounds of "El Viaje" are, essentially, fields recordings from a journey by train in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

For "El Viaje Revisited" we selected fragments and sections from those recordings and we remixed them to obtain new tracks.

We think that "El Viaje Revisited" is a soundscape. We are very satisfied with the results, because we believe that the originals recordings have been improved in this album.

El Viaje Revisited is formed by Two Volumes, each lasting 79 minutes.

The Western Lands, the western bank of the Nile: The frontier to a vast and inhospitable desert, today as in ancient times but also, in Egyptian mythology, the Land of the Dead: A space open to be filled, just as William Burroughs work published in 1987, with meaning, an open book' in many ways, readable from all possible angles, strung together by an ambience which transcends the limitations of chronological 'storytelling': Juggling with atmospheres, real and unreal memories, and steeped in occult symbolism. The road which leads to the Western Lands, Burroughs tells us, "is devious and unpredictable. Today's easy passage may be tomorrow's death trap. To reach the Western Lands is to achieve freedom from fear."

Far more than an interpretation of Burroughs' text, Tiago Sousa's "The Western Lands" retraces itself the journey of an artist towards an unknown territory, aiming not at a conclusion', but a transition: Just as Burroughs intersects the present with an hallucinatory beyond', subverting our common notion of reality', Tiago Sousa's seven compositions draw upon both the noisy and the melodious, loose rhythms as well as hypnotic repetitions, parallels of equal value which never converge to one simple truth, one simple solution. It comes as no surprise, then, that "The Western Lands" also marks the introduction of a second voice to Sousa's musical spectrum the guitar, new counterpart to the piano, the former protagonist of his two earlier works ("Crepúsculo", 2006, and "Noite / Nuit", split with french artist SRX, 2007): From the frail harmonies of "The Writer" and "The Valley", to the harsh and discordant sounds of "Can any soul survive the searing fireball of an atomic blast", the sinister melancholy of "The Road to Western Lands" pieces like "Waghdas", "Ka" and "Centipede's City" always hold Sousa's work in an unsettling balance, never quite yielding to either side, unfolding a wide musical landscape we as listeners can wander in: A musical cut up', equally "devious and unpredictable", whose lost part are for us to find: "The most obvious road is almost always a fool's road."

Stuzha (which is mean “severe cold” from russian) based on field recordings of Siberian winter landscapes with acoustic guitars & other live instruments. Through the Snowfield is four songs of frost, winds, snow and survival in the desolate Siberian winter.

Here is No Life Without a Fire was recorded in the taiga forest during the frosty winternight time, when temperature is below -25C. That piece shows that life of a man in the such a cold regions is absolutely depends from the fire. It gives to a man a hope & life, without it he's dead in few hours... It's a hymn to fire.

Lost in Catacombs was recorded during snowy december 2007. Most sounds are from enclosed big metallic tank which is used a long time ago for water keeping. This vessel is located pretty far away from civilization and in the nighttime an ambient atmosphere here is a magnificent!

Through The Snowfield is a track which is describing a blank feelings of a men, who is riding on a horse through endless snowy fields... The sound of the small bells is coming from a neck of a coachman's horse, and these bells are just like a lighthouse for a ship in the storm. They are only way to know where your horse are when a blizzard start to blow... That piece is about a solitude & loneliness of a soul. There is also a fragment of Russian folklore song in it.

Odinokaya Garmon' is a Russian folklore song.

In August of 2008 Brian John Mitchell of Remora, Nicholas Slaton of Slicnaton and Robert Brown of Northern Valentine collaborated on what has come to be known as the Clear Field recordings. Nicholas and Brian were in the studio working on a series of film recordings under the title Panthan when, while on tour, Robert Brown of Northern Valentine stopped in for an impromptu session. With Mitchell & Brown on guitars & Slaton engineering while playing bass & electronics they recorded a couple hours of music.

The Clear Field recordings are a unique combination of elements of all three projects. You hear the loops & aggression of Remora’s guitar work, Northern Valentine’s ambient shimmering glacial guitars, & slicnaton’s orchestrated glitch & deep bass tones. While hearing all three individual musicians, it still is clearly a collaboration of the three rather than one of the projects with two special guests; it is a unique sound of its own.

This release is not for everyone, but fans of Silber will definitely find a lot of sounds to dig & recognize. “Thousand-Faced Moon” has an underwater ambient sound, with a build of tension & pressure as a capsized ship sinks. “Curiosity Makes You Irresponsible” is the noisiest track, sounding a bit like listening to a Brian Eno album while navigating a war field. “Slightly Quicker Rotation” goes from glitchy loops to guitar improvisation to a darkwave groove & into aggressive ambient before working itself & the whole album back down. If it sounds like your cup of tea, it probably is.

Saito Koji is a musician from Japan, who creates wonderful minimal drone-music with guitar, keyboards, field recordings and some effects. He is known for his releases on Magic Book Records, Kesh Recordings and Gears of Sand Recordings.

"Time / Line" contains the two pieces "Time" and "Line", with a duration of 33 minutes each. "Time" is drone in the best way. You feel like standing in a field of clouds or wrappped in a warm blanket while listening to this. Just slightly shifting tones, moving very soft and slowly. Layer over layer, and only one big, resonant drone, oscillating between your ears. "Line", the second part, is more moving, more concrete. The tone is sharper, vibrates a little bit, and the shifting from one sound to the other is faster than in "Time".

Both pieces are really great minimal drone music. Peaceful and centering. Please enjoy.

"The Brittle Ballet" is the new work from Etienne Michelet, a french composer and musician in the fields of minimal, classical and experimental music, wellknown for his "Calendaires"-series (released on Four Directional Doubt, frozen elephants and Resting Bell), the "Tombs for Anatole" (released via la nouvelle degelee) and various other releases.

"The Brittle Ballet" contains eleven miniature pieces with a compete duration of 14 minutes.
All pieces are very minimal and calm, like fragile sketches. The first six parts are very playful, envolving beautiful new melodies in every miniature. The seventh part marks a kind of intermission with a meditative percussive interlude, ending up in part eight, more dominated by sustained string-sounds, and part nine, picking up the melody-motive from the first parts like a reprise.

The "Ballet" ends with two long and droning pieces, guiding the listener home after a short walk through memories from long ago.

I'm writing these words from Qingdao, China where this collection of songs sound like they're from outer space compared to the syrupy love songs that blast out of the speakers here. These pieces take me back to my years in my studio apartment off McAllister Street in San Francisco. Often, as I'd watch the evening fog roll by pass Twin Peaks out of my kitchen window, I'd play my guitar; and sometimes on those special nights angels would visit, allowing my fingers to miraculously play themselves.

The recordings are of various objective quality due to bad recording technique ('Sagano' was recorded on an IPod mic). But when I tried to rerecord some of the songs I discovered that I preferred the original versions because they had the most honest emotion. In the end I decided to just keep them, warts and all, as a document of that time. Basically what you hear is me in my cramped kitchen talking to myself by banging, scraping, and caressing six steel strings on a plank of wood.

I don't know where these songs come from; but I know it is a dark restless place. So in that spirit, here is a collection of lullabies for the sleepless who hold a special place in my heart.

Celer is the sound, visual, literary, and artistic endeavor of the husband and wife duo of Will Long and Danielle Baquet-Long. Their intent was producing works that reflect the sincere nature and importance of love, the fragility of life, and the importance of togetherness, through a relative and absolute symposium of expression.

Originating from improvisational piano sonatas, the husband and wife duo performed their entire pieces on the piano, allowing the keys to float into their triangular sound setup, and in the end, produce a result that makes sound appear as if it is actually standing upright.

In the first self-titled track, Celer present the definition of their experiment. To understand this procedure the listener must think of a typical music track to be flowing from left to right, such as starting at 0:00 and continuing to the end, from left to right, just as is always displayed by any typical music player. From this point, at the end of the recording, the listener must think of the track being 'pulled upright' from the center. This is how it was originally recorded. The original beginning and ending are now indistinguishable in the center of the track, and the current beginning and ending finally only resemble each other.

The second self-titled track shows Celer demonstrating a continuous mix of shorter experiments, all having unknown geometrical shapes, flowing effortlessly into each other.

Hailing from Brasília, Andrei Machado composed his first full-length album Lacuna in the space of two months.
